Will the next Pope be a woman? No says the comic strip Non-Sequitur Feb 27, 2013
Well tomorrow is the last day of the present Pope.
It is difficult to determine for anybody outside the inner circle of Vatican and curia priests the real spiritual makeup of the current Pope. Given the gigantic organization that is the Catholic church and its global reaches the taskof discovering beforehand the spiritual reality of the new Pope.
We will not know who they elect and only few will ever guess waht went on in those closed deliberations. The one who has known always is the true head of the church Jesus Christ. Through all the prophecies of the Bible He has made known to those who keep His Word close at hand and near the heart that there is coming a time that a very evil False Prophet will arise to join with a very evil world ruler to support his rule.
This is what I believe will come out of this next conclave of cardinals that will elect the next Pope.
In today’s Non-Sequitur cartoon strip we see Danae continuing the conversation she had yesterday with her with her father which informs her that she is not qualified to be a pope because she is a woman and she hasn’t been indoctrinated in the Catholic Church and lastly that she is a kid. Danae interprets all these reasons to be that she is overqualified for the job. The ability of the cartoonist Wiley Miller to express the very challenge that awaits the Cardinals in four panes of comic strip is brilliant and Willey is a master almost without equal. As an artist he is superb and as an intellectual capable of grasping a very complex thing and condensing it in four illustrations there are no words to describe him.
The first disqualification is right on the money. The Catholic church has pushed their ecclesiastical and doctrinal beliefs well over the teaching of the Word of the Bible. Through the thousand and hundreds of years of existence the Catholic church has introduced concepts, rituals, and interpretations of the Bible that I consider separate the faithful believers in Jesus Christ from the truth. In the book of Revelation we see Jesus addressing a similar church as the church of Laodicea and His verdict is that He is about to spit it out of His mouth.
To the Church in Laodicea
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Next the father tells Danae that she is still a kid. Which is a fact that implies that her mind is not developed or mature enough to know the intricacies of command and leadership, the understanding of the Word, the pastoring of the sheep, and the will to stir the ship into safe harbor. But our Lord commands us to become like a child and He makes comparison to children in many passages to point out a basic fact of adulthood, the hardening of the heart with the experiences of live. Oh how lucky the world would be if the Cardinals elect a man with the heart of a child for the love of the Word of God!
Last disqualification is that she is a girl. This is definitively introduced to cause strife and dissension in all who see the cartoon. This is one of the contentious and fought out socio political battles in our world today. My only observation is that the one who introduced the ruler-ship of men was God Himself. Jesus had twelve men disciples and the role of women is well established in the Gospels. The first person He appeared to to have as a witness after His resurrection was a woman, and except for John there where only woman under the cross witnessing His death through crucifixion. The lord loves women as much as He loves men!
